How well do your tires grip the road?

We are not a driving school, but each day customers ask us for advice on things they believe affect their performance behind wheel. Which is understandable as performance can sometimes be corrected simply by fixing a flaw with the vehicle!

When driving on the highway, do you feel your tires aren’t gripping the road properly, or that you have to grip your steering wheel a little tighter to keep your vehicle for veering left or right? Does your steering wheel shake? Basically, if you’re starting to wonder whether your vehicle is safe to operate, especially on highways or country roads, trust your instincts. Chances are there’s something wrong.

Tires are constantly in contact with the road. If your tires are over or under inflated, if your tires are not aligned (i.e. totally parallel to each other), this will cause your tires to wear unevenly, which may, or rather, will eventually compromise the handling of your vehicle, and of course, your safety.

What to do?

We recommend having your tires inspected for wear every three months. Your OCTO technician will check that your wheels are parallel. He will also rotate your tires every 10,000 kilometers or as recommended in your owner’s manual. As for tire pressure, you can check it yourself every month or before a long road trip with a tire gauge. Warm tires will give you an inaccurate reading. Check them when they’re cold, i.e. minimum three hours after the vehicle has been parked.

Nitrogen-filled tires?

Next time you see your OCTO technician, ask him about nitrogen tire inflation. Nitrogen-filled tires maintain the required pressure longer, foster optimal handling of the vehicle, and even reduce fuel consumption.

Feeling safe behind the wheel is something we take seriously at OCTO.
