The best way to care of your vehicle after winter: 5 tasks to perform

After months of driving on treacherous roads filled with ice and snow, your vehicle deserves some much-needed maintenance. The team at your neighbourhood OCTO Auto Service Plus has put together the five most important tasks to complete before getting behind the wheel this summer.

  1. Change your tires

After March 15, once daytime temperatures stay above 7 C, it’s time to say goodbye to your winter tires. But before switching to your summer tires, check to ensure they’re still in good condition. If the tread pattern shows uneven wear, ask your mechanic to correct the wheel alignment.

Use a depth gauge to measure the tread depth of your tires in several places to ensure it’s still at least 6/32”. Finally, inflate your tires to the recommended PSI indicated in your user manual.

  1. Check the fluid levels

It’s good to change your car’s engine oil in the spring. You should also top up your car’s coolant, windshield washer fluid and brake fluid. If the fluid levels have dropped significantly over the winter, the tank may be cracked or leaking. If this is the case, you should visit a mechanic to have the defective part repaired or replaced.

  1. Clean or replace filters

Inspect your engine, cabin and fuel filters to see if they’re damaged or contaminated with debris. If necessary, clean or replace them.

  1. Wash and protect the bodywork

Thoroughly wash the outside of your vehicle to remove stubborn dirt and grime. You should also apply wax to protect the paintwork from summer hazards like insects and UV rays. If necessary, ask your mechanic for advice on whether your vehicle requires a rustproofing treatment.

  1. Clean the interior

After a long winter, the inside of your vehicle is probably littered with small stones, dead leaves, calcium residue and dust. Make sure you vacuum, shampoo and polish every surface to extend the life of your car and make it more enjoyable to drive.

Make an appointment for a full inspection and maintenance

Although you may be able to perform some basic maintenance tasks yourself, nothing can replace a professional inspection. In fact, many mechanical problems can easily go unnoticed. Therefore, don’t risk driving around this summer in a car with hidden problems.

This spring, make an appointment at your nearest OCTO Auto Service Plus. We look forward to serving you!
